One of my favorite things to do on a day off, is to dig through the kitchen in search of something with which to create a face mask. It might seem strange, but the kitchen is the perfect place to find nourishing, moisturizing, calming, collagen enhancing, detoxifying ingredients for your skin. After all, if it's good enough to put into your body, it should be good enough to put on the outside too.
Today, I decided to look for something that would nourish and detoxify tired, dry Winter skin, and stimulate circulation at the same time. Matcha seemed like a great place to start.
I recently purchased some matcha powder in an attempt to replace coffee...I'm still working on that one. But I love the smell, and the taste, and the fact that matcha is full of antioxidants, amino acids, and chlorophyll. So why not make a mask out of it?
Benefits of Matcha Green Tea Powder
For all skin types: The chlorophyl in matcha is a strong natural detoxifier that fights free radicals, and protects both acne prone skin and aging skin.
Anti-aging: Matcha protects our skin from the harmful UV rays that age our precious skin. It also stimulates elastin production, which adds volume to the skin.
Treats inflammation: EGCG is the main polyphenol found in Matcha and is known to reduce the formation of free radicals, which play a role in disease and inflammation.
Stimulating: It helps increase circulation, bringing blood and oxygen to the skin.
Treats oil prone skin: Matcha contains tannins that shrink pores, and slow the production of sebum.
Matcha is an all natural food source, and is good for skin of all ages.
I decided to up the antioxidant game by mixing the matcha with some local honey, and cacao powder. I added a little nettle infused almond oil too to (for added nourishment). If you have some nettle infused oil lying around, fantastic! Otherwise, choose an oil that works well with your skin: grapeseed, almond, jojoba, even olive oil.

Nourishing Matcha and Cacao Face Mask Recipe
2 tsp Matcha Green Tea Powder
1 tsp Organic Cacao Powder
2 tsp Local Honey
1 tsp Nettle Infused Almond Oil (you can sub plain Almond, Jojoba, Grapeseed, or Olive Oil)
1 tsp filtered water
Combine all ingredients, and use your finger to stir it into a paste. Apply to clean face and neck, avoiding contact with eyes. This mask will remain tacky to the touch. After 20 minutes (or longer), rinse, moisturize, and enjoy your refreshed skin.
